Heat and WBGT

Heat guidance by your state's rules.

Sports Safe estimates Wet Bulb Globe Temperature for every field, all day, and tells you what your state's heat chart calls for at that number: rest breaks, practice limits, and equipment.

Heat

How heat guidance works

Heat is as much a reason to change practice as lightning. Sports Safe tracks WBGT for every field all day and tells you what your state's rules call for at that number.

Example chart

Texas, UIL Class 3

  • Normal activity · Under 82.0°F

Normal activities. Provide at least 3 separate rest breaks each hour, minimum 3 minutes each.

  • Use discretion · 82.0 to 86.9°F

Use discretion for intense or prolonged exercise; watch at-risk athletes closely. Provide at least 3 separate rest breaks each hour, minimum 4 minutes each.

  • Modify activity · 87.0 to 90.0°F

Maximum outdoor practice time is 2 hours. Provide at least 4 separate rest breaks each hour, minimum 4 minutes each.

Equipment: Football/Field Hockey: helmet, shoulder pads, and shorts only during practice.

  • High risk (minimal activity) · 90.1 to 92.0°F

Maximum outdoor practice time is 1 hour. 20 minutes of rest must be distributed throughout that hour.

Equipment: No protective equipment may be worn. No conditioning activities.

  • Cancel outdoor activity · 92.1°F and above

No outdoor workouts or contests. Delay practice or competition until a cooler WBGT is reached.

Each field follows its own state's chart. WBGT in °F.

  1. Step 1: WBGT for every field

Heat illness is judged by Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, not air temperature. Sports Safe estimates it for each field from live temperature, humidity, wind, and sun, and you can calibrate a field so it only ever reads more cautiously.

  2. Step 2: Your state's chart sets the bands

Rest breaks, water breaks, equipment, and practice limits come from your state's own heat chart where Sports Safe has one, usually your state athletic association's policy.

  3. Step 3: An alert when it climbs

Coaches with heat alerts on are told when a field moves into a stricter band, with the guidance for that band in the app. When heat eases, the app updates without an alert, and one Conditions cleared alert goes out once everything is back to normal.

Watch it play out

One hot day, by your state's chart

Illustration
An illustration of one hot day at Varsity Field in Texas, checked against the Texas Class 3 heat chart. Around 10 AM the estimated WBGT reaches 82°F: the chart says use discretion, and coaches get a heat alert. Around 1 PM it reaches 87°F, the modify activity band: practice is capped at 2 hours with at least 4 rest breaks an hour, and a second alert goes out. As the afternoon cools, WBGT drops under 87°F and the guidance eases back to use discretion. There is no alert when heat eases a band. Once WBGT is back under 82°F, one Conditions cleared alert goes out.

Plan and prove it

Beyond the reading

Plan practice around the heat, and keep a record that you followed your policy.

A WBGT of 85 degrees in the Use discretion band of a Texas Class 3 heat chart, with activity guidance: at least 3 rest breaks each hour of at least 4 minutes, and water breaks every 30 to 45 minutes.

Hourly forecasts

WBGT, heat index, UV, and chance of rain for the next 12 hours, 24 hours, or 5 days, with the hours thunderstorms are expected clearly marked, so you can plan practice before you get there.

Field calibration

Each field can be calibrated: automatically, by hand, or on the Organization plan from your own logged meter readings. Calibration only ever makes a reading more cautious, never less.

FAQ

Common questions

What is WBGT, and why use it instead of the heat index?

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) estimates heat stress on a body working in direct sunlight. It combines air temperature, humidity, wind, and sunlight, while the heat index only uses temperature and humidity in the shade. That is why many state athletic associations base their heat policies, such as practice length, rest breaks, and equipment limits, on WBGT.

How is WBGT calculated, and why might it differ from my meter?

Sports Safe estimates WBGT for each field from current weather: temperature, humidity, wind, and sun. It's an estimate, not a meter reading, so a sheltered field or one far from the nearest weather station can read differently. Each field can be corrected: set your own correction in the field's settings, or on the Organization plan let Sports Safe learn one from the meter readings you log. A correction only ever raises the number, never lowers it.

Which heat policy does Sports Safe follow?

Your state athletic association's heat chart wherever Sports Safe has one, including the right region or classification within the state. Some states share another state's chart. Everywhere else, the app uses a general guideline and says so. You can pick a different chart for any field under Heat safety chart in its settings.

Can I keep a record that I checked conditions before practice?

Yes. On the Organization plan, a coach can log a WBGT reading right from the dashboard. The app's estimate is filled in, with room for a meter reading, who took it, and notes, and a reminder can prompt the next check. Each entry is timestamped and locked once saved. A correction is recorded as a new entry, not an edit to the old one. The full history exports as a CSV. It's called compliance logging in the app, and it's a straightforward paper trail if you're ever asked to show that your program followed its heat policy.
